They catch fish and shrimp and wake up early in the morning, even the kids pitch in on the work. They stay there because they can’t make a fortune anywhere else

  • This area is in danger of flooding from annual Monsoons, Cyclones, and Tsunamis. Describe each of these dangers.

Monsoons- A really strong wind that blows seasonally across India and Southeast Asia

Cyclones- (tornado) a strong wind that blows in a clockwise manor

Tsunamis-  A large wave that arrives to land usually by an earthquake

  • Why was the 1991 Cyclone so devastating? Were the people prepared?

Because they weren’t ready for it. They thought the earth walls would stop the ocean from coming over into their land. Many of the people were kill and everything the people owned were destroyed (140,000 people killed)

  • How are the people here improving protection from flooding? What is the importance of Mangrove forests, and why are replanting efforts so important to coastal areas in South Asia?

Some villages have shelters for these storms and also have sensors to tell if a storm was coming. They have to use the wood from the trees to build homes, boats, and ect. It is important to replant these forests because there could be another storm that could come and wipe out everything. Also the Mangrove Forests are home to many Animals such as the Bangled Tigers, which are becoming extincted.
